Entomophagy saves the world...
A couple of packets of these just arrived to my office; they are roasted crickets. I ordered them online after I found out that one of my students was doing some research on entomophagy: the human consumption of insects as food. Although eating insects is uncommon across Western societies, it is actually a pretty common practice around the world. I remembered eating chapulines (roasted crickets) in the south of Mexico (they tasted delicious on a quesadillas), and was quite excited to see that there was an online shop in Australia that specialised in entomophagical products. A couple of upmarket restaurants in Sydney are also offering insect treats on their menus. There are arguments that entomophagy is good for the environment and for our health, so let’s see if the trend catches on in Australia…
